About Hello in Elephant

After decades of research into the ways elephants communicate and behave, we're beginning to understand their language. Now you can speak it too! The Hello in Elephant campaign has been created to raise awareness and drive donations for African elephants.

A collaboration between the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and Elephant Voices, HiE uses voice recognition technology, as well as input for text and emoji, to translates simple human messages into the Elephant Language. The sounds used in Hello in Elephant are recorded from real elephants in Africa. Recognising that many people do not have the opportunity to hear these rich and complex calls in the wild, Hello in Elephant offers the chance to experience these magnificent animals through their digital device, so their voice can be shared and heard around the world.

Elephants share our emotional intelligence and sophisticated communication but without action, their language could become extinct. Loss of habitat, poaching, and human-wildlife conflict are just some of the threats being faced by elephants and there are now less than 400,000 elephants roaming Africa, a drop of 95% in just 100 years. As we open the door to the wonders of elephant communication, we hope to open the hearts and minds of people around the world into taking action to protect this endangered species.
